Ingredients
- 1 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
- 5 cups water (adjust to preferred consistency)
- 2 whole tomatoes (juicy, chopped)
- 1.5 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste (homemade preferred)
- 1 tsp salt (to taste)
- 2 tbsp butter (for tadka)
- 0.5 small red onion (thinly sliced)
- 4 whole garlic cloves (sliced)
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 0.25 tsp asafoetida (hing) (optional, a pinch)

Add red lentils, water, chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, ginger-garlic paste, and salt to a pot.
